DHAKA: Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday. In his second inauguration speech, he promised a “golden age” for America. He called the day “liberation day” and focused on conservative goals.
Trump Renames Gulf of Mexico
One of Trump’s first executive orders was to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” He said the change was a response to Mexico’s failure to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum jokingly suggested renaming the U.S. “Mexican America.”
Pardons for Jan. 6 Defendants
Trump pardoned nearly 1,500 people charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. This included Enrique Tarrio and Stewart Rhodes, leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who had been convicted of seditious conspiracy. Tarrio and Rhodes are expected to be released soon. Critics say the pardons undermine democracy, but Trump defended the move, calling the rioters “hostages.”
TikTok Ban Paused
Trump signed an executive order halting enforcement of the TikTok ban for 75 days. This came after the app briefly shut down over the weekend. Trump said the delay would allow time for a national security deal. Legal experts question whether the order can override existing laws.
