DHAKA: Six months have passed since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government following a student-led mass uprising.
On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and went to India. This marked the end of her nearly 16-year rule.
Millions of people across Bangladesh, including in Dhaka, celebrated the fall of what they called a fascist regime. Many gathered on the streets to offer prayers, expressing gratitude for the change.
The uprising came at a great cost. More than 1,000 people, including students like Abu Sayeed, Mugdho, and Wasim, lost their lives. Security forces and ruling party supporters violently suppressed the movement.
At least 400 people lost their eyesight in the violence. Over 23,000 were seriously injured, with many requiring amputations. Thousands are still suffering from bullet wounds.
The nation continues to remember the sacrifices made for a new Bangladesh.
