PDBF Staff Protest Against ‘Conspiracy to Remove MD Safdar’

Dhaka: Employees of the Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation (PDBF), operating under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, have staged protests and formed human chains across the country. They are rallying against rumors that the Managing Director (MD) Maududur Rashid Safdar, may be stepping down from his position.

As the rumors spread on Tuesday, employees from various district and upazila branches gathered in front of their offices, voicing strong opposition to what they believe is a conspiracy against Mr. Safdar. The employees demanded that he remain in his role, expressing deep frustration and concern over his possible resignation.

According to several field workers, since Mr. Safdar took over as Managing Director on December 20, 2020, he has been instrumental in implementing a zero-tolerance policy against the corruption and irregularities that previously plagued the organization.

Despite the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Safdar managed to steer PDBF towards profitability, earning him widespread respect among the staff.

Mr. Safdar’s leadership saw the successful management of a 3 billion BDT stimulus package loan from the government, aimed at poverty alleviation. Recently, he initiated the Extension-2 Project in 135 upazilas to further expand PDBF’s reach.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his dedication and integrity, Mr. Safdar has received the “Shuddhachar Award” for two consecutive years. The PDBF Board of Governors, satisfied with his performance, recommended extending his tenure for an additional three years, with his second term beginning on December 21, 2023.

However, Mr. Safdar’s uncompromising stance on corruption has also made him a target. He took disciplinary action against several influential officials within the organization for their involvement in various irregularities, including misuse of funds and unethical practices. Notably, former directors and project directors, such as Mr. Aminul Islam and Mr. Monarul Islam, were implicated in significant financial misconduct, leading to their dismissal.

Investigations by Bangladesh Bank’s financial intelligence unit and the National Security Intelligence (NSI) confirmed these allegations, prompting legal recommendations. The actions taken by Mr. Safdar have reportedly led to backlash from those affected, who are now believed to be behind efforts to destabilize the organization. Those facing ongoing investigations have also been implicated in these activities.

In response to the unrest, Mr. Safdar has called for calm and urged all employees to continue their work, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline and a positive work environment at PDBF.
