DHAKA: Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is set to formally take over as party chairman in the coming days, according to party sources.

The position became vacant after the death of BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia on 30 December. She led the party for more than four decades, from 1984 until her death.

Several members of the BNP Standing Committee said the party constitution clearly addresses the situation. Under the BNP charter, the senior vice chairman assumes the role of chairman if the post becomes vacant and continues until a new chairman is elected.

Party leaders said a Standing Committee meeting is likely within the next one or two days. The meeting is expected to officially announce Tarique Rahman’s elevation to ensure continuity in party leadership.
